The University of Texas at Tyler School of Nursing has received approval to launch a Doctor of Nursing Practice in Nurse Anesthesia program, according to an Aug. 18 Kilgore News Herald report.
The three-year, post-baccalaureate degree will train critical care nurses to become dual-certified as adult-geriatric acute care nurse practitioners and certified registered nurse anesthetists. The hybrid program, which combines online and in-person coursework, will welcome its first cohort in the fall.
The program is designed to address East Texas’ critical shortage of anesthesia providers, particularly in rural communities where CRNAs often serve as the sole anesthesia clinicians in surgery centers and hospitals, according to the report.
