Houston is the best-paying city for gastroenterologists with one to seven years of experience, according to Medscape’s salary explorer.
The rising compensation comes as GI medicine faces mounting challenges. The U.S. is projected to face a shortage of over 1,600 gastroenterologists by the end of 2025, according to GastroScholar data, driven by rising demand for procedures, workforce attrition and growing patient volumes.
Moreover, colorectal cancer is now the fastest-growing cancer type in adults under 50. Diagnoses are rising rapidly among people under 25, with screening rates in the 45- to 49-year-old age group still lagging. Younger patients are also more likely to be diagnosed at later stages and face more aggressive disease.
