Nearly two-thirds of physicians could qualify for an incentive bonus program at their place of work, according to a July 8 Medscape report.
The report, titled “Comparing Your Pay Against Your Peers:” Medscape Physician Compensation Report 2025, surveyed 7,322 physicians across more than 29 specialties between Oct. 3, 2024, and Jan. 15, 2025.
Here are four other stats on incentive bonuses for physicians, according to the report:
1. In 2024, the average incentive bonus for qualifying physicians was $48,000.
2. Physicians told Medscape the factors that contributed to incentive bonus calculations were:
- RVUs generated: 60%
- Quality care metrics: 43%
- Patient satisfaction ratings: 26%
- Records completion: 24%
- Number of procedures: 18%
- Patient mix: 11%
- Payer mix: 11%
- Patient throughput time: 10%
- Cost-of-care reduction: 10%
- Other: 14%
3. Physicians in the survey overall saw their ability to maximize the incentive bonus structure as controllable. On a scale of one to five, with one being “controllable to a great extent” and five being “not at all,” 76% of physicians rated their ability to maximize their performance bonus between one and three.
4. Most physicians in the survey — 66% — said that quantifiable metrics such as RVUs and patient visits do not affect their incentive bonus or base salary.
