Under half of physicians (38%) are currently involved in an entrepreneurial venture, or are considering one, outside of their traditional work, according to Medscape’s 2025 “‘I Get to Be Creative Again — That’s the Juice’: Medscape Physicians as Entrepreneurs Report 2025,” report, published June 13.
Here are six things to know about physicians’ entrepreneurial ventures:
1. Over half of physicians who are involved in entrepreneurial ventures, 53%, are involved ventures outside of the medical field.
2. Nearly half of physicians with entrepreneurial ventures plan to (25%), or are considering (33%), leaving medicine for their new business.
3. Nearly half of physicians with entrepreneurial ventures (40%) serve as either sole proprietor or executive leader of the project.
4. Over half of physicians are at least somewhat confident that their ventures will succeed. While just 14% are very confident, an additional 35% are confident and 34% are somewhat confident.
5. Over half of physicians (59%) anticipate profitability in their venture within three years.
6. Over half of physicians (57%) plan to eventually sell off their venture.
