Surgeons and anesthesiologists see the highest average compensation out of 801 occupations, according to an analysis of federal compensation data by The Business Journals.
Surgeons ranked first, earning an average of $219,770 in 2009, the latest year for which figures are available from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Anesthesiologists came in second, earning an average of $211,750.
No occupation outside healthcare appeared until ninth place. Oral surgeons ranked in third, earning an average of $210,710; orthodontists ranked fourth with an average of $206,190; and obstetricians ranked fifth, earning an average of $204,470.
