Metropolitan areas with the highest RN employment

There are currently 3,282,010 registered nurses employed in the U.S., according to May 2024 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, published April 2.

While California has the most employed RNs of any state, the New York City area is the metropolitan area with the most employed RNs. 

The metropolitan areas with the most employed RNs: 

1. New York-Newark-Jersey City, N.Y.-N.J.: 195,470

2. Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, Calif.: 107,340

3. Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, Ill.-Ind.: 100,620

4. Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington, Pa.-N.J.-Del.-Md.: 74,840

5. Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas: 72,640
