Beckley, W.V.-based Med-Surg Physician Group and its owner Oluyemisi Sangodeyi, MD, agreed to pay $152,382 to settle allegations they submitted false Medicare and Medicaid claims and falsely certified compliance with program requirements, according to an April 2 news release from the Justice Department.
What happened?
- Med-Surg Physician Group improperly billed Medicare and Medicaid for telehealth originating site facility fees (code Q3014) when patients were at home, violating federal regulations. These rules state that only facilities where patients are physically present — excluding their homes — can claim the Q3014 fee.
- Med-Surg submitted these improper claims between March 25, 2020, and Jan. 27, 2021 despite guidance from the West Virginia Bureau for Medical Services.
- The practice received $76,191 in inappropriate payments.
