A bill in the West Virginia Legislature would enable optometrists to perform eye surgeries, according to a March 17 report from WTAP.
Under Senate Bill 565 and House Bill 2975, optometrists would be allowed to perform posterior capsulotomy, peripheral iridotomy and selective laser trabeculoplasty procedures.
Currently, only ophthalmologists are permitted to perform eye surgeries in West Virginia.
The West Virginia State Senate passed the bill, which now heads to the West Virginia House of Representatives, the report said.
