Of 258 cases where stents were used to treat pseudoaneurysms in AV grafts, 10.1 percent of the grafts were excised because of infection. In the cases where a covered stent was used, however, the infection rate was 41 percent. Similarly, of 109 excisions of grafts due to infection, almost one-third had been treated with a covered stent.
Lead investigator Charles Kim, MD, suggests a need for new strategies to decrease infection in this technique or avoidance of the technique.
