The ophthalmologists from Constitution Eye Surgery Center East in Waterford, Conn., received permission from the Connecticut Office of Health Care Access (OHCA) to open the ASC as long as they also provided coverage for patients requiring specialty eye care at local hospitals to ensure the hospitals would have appropriate ophthalmologist coverage.
The OHCA recently conducted a hearing on the matter after a member of the medical staff and the CFO at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London said the ophthalmologists were violating the OHCA’s conditions when they refused to provide on-call coverage to the hospital’s emergency department, according to the report.
A decision on the matter is expected in a few weeks.
