Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) and ranking member Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) said they want detailed quarterly updates from CMS and the HHS Office of the Inspector General on investigations, enforcement actions, recovery efforts and how the offices are spending their fraud, waste and abuse budgets.
The healthcare reform law allows CMS to be more proactive in detecting improper claims before payments are made. HHS estimates Medicare and Medicaid fraud costs $60 billion a year.
