How many physicians are worth more than $5M?

In 2024, 28% of physicians have a net worth ranging between $2 million and $4.9 million, according to Medscape’s 2024 “Physician Wealth and Debt Report,” published June 12.

Medscape’s net worth survey took into consideration physicians’ home equity, personal property and financial investments. 

Specialties ranked by the percentage of physicians worth more than $5 million: 

Urology: 33%

Gastroenterology: 31%

Radiology: 31%

Cardiology: 28%

Orthopedics: 28%

Otolaryngology: 26%

Dermatology: 23%

Ophthalmology: 23%

Plastic surgery: 23%

Anesthesiology: 21%

Oncology: 18%

Pulmonary medicine: 18%

OB-GYN: 17%

Nephrology: 16%

Emergency medicine: 16%

Critical care:16%

Neurology: 15%

General surgery: 15%

Allergy and immunology: 14%

Infectious diseases: 13%

Pathology: 13%

Internal medicine:12%
