Here are five numbers to know regarding anesthesiologists in the U.S., using data from Medscape‘s “Physician Compensation Report” for 2024, its “Anesthesiologist Compensation Report” for 2023 and the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics employment survey:

33,470: The number of employed anesthesiologists in the U.S.

$472,000: The average annual total compensation of anesthesiologists.

27,090: The number of anesthesiologists that are employed in ambulatory care settings (physicians’ offices and outpatient care centers). 

57%: The percentage of anesthesiologists who said they spend more than 40 hours a week seeing patients. 

69%: The percentage of anesthesiologists who said they will continue to treat Medicare/Medicaid patients.
