Dr. Paulus was accused of implanting medically unnecessary stents in his patients and falsifying the degree of stenosis in their medical records, resulting in a $41 million settlement and Dr. Paulus’ indictment, according to a Justice Department news release.
He was convicted in 2016, but numerous appeals and an overturned conviction led to a second trial in 2023, according to the Daily Independent report.
According to the report, Dr. Paulus agreed to retire his medical license in 2014, which was another reason for the charges’ dismissal.
