The 6 biggest challenges faced by medical residents

For the last five years, medical residents have consistently named work-life balance, time pressure and a fear of failure as their biggest challenges, and 2023 is no different, according to Medscape’s 2023 “Residents Lifestyle & Happiness Report,” published Oct. 17.

Here are the biggest challenges faced by residents this year: 

1. Work and life balance: 33%

2. Dealing with the time pressure/demands on time: 22% 

3. Fear of failure or making a serious mistake: 15%

4. Debt: 10% 

5. Dealing with stress: 8% 

6. Developing the clinical skills required by specialty: 7%
