He said the merger of New Bern Anesthesia Associates and Carteret Anesthesia Associates made the group practice more attractive to him and his colleagues since it would allow the anesthesiologists to reap the benefits of a larger group and avoid hospital employment. He predicts that in 15 years, most physicians will be hospital employees.
The merger of the two anesthesia groups helped the anesthesiologists maintain their independence, he said. The merger also increased the group’s negotiation power with insurers and improved business and accounting functions, according to the report.
The physicians, along with certified nurse anesthetists, will continue to provide anesthesia services at CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern and the Carolina East Health System’s surgery center.
