Great Place to Work: Ramapo Valley Surgical Center (Ramsey, N.J.)

The staff members at Ramapo Valley Surgical Center (RVSC) in Ramsey, N.J., like to say that their physicians can “set their watches to RVSC.” This motto demonstrates a commitment by the staff to ensuring that cases remain on schedule and there are few or no delays.

The work required to maintain such a high level of efficiency doesn’t come easy, and it requires staff members who are not only dedicated to quality but also to the center for which they work. Ramapo Valley has such a staff, says Amy Allard, RN, administrative director for Ramapo.

“As a nurse for 25 years who is well aware of how things work in other settings, I am very happy to be in a place where people actually ‘walk the walk and talk the talk,’” says Ms. Allard. “I am proud of the dedication to high quality and individualized patient care delivered by our staff and surgeons. We provide the type of care we always wanted to but were never in the right place to do so.”

Ramapo Valley opened in Nov. 2005, and currently performs ENT, orthopedics, ophthalmology, general surgery, podiatry, gynecology and pain management. It is a freestanding surgery center with three operating rooms and one procedure room, performing about 4,500 procedures annually.

There are 27 physicians who perform cases in the center, most of whom are investors. Ramapo Valley’s board is led by Ken Austin, MD, president of Ramapo Valley, who was named as a “physician to know” in the Sept./Oct. issue of Becker’s ASC Review. The ASC’s medical director is Monte J. Goldstein, MD, a member of the center’s anesthesia group who took on the role of medical director to actively participate in maintaining a high level of excellence, says Ms. Allard.

Great leadership is only one reason for the ASC’s success. Ramapo Valley has been able to retain its original staff members, fostering a family-like environment.

“They treat every patient as they would like to be treated,” says Ms. Allard. “They have a personal interest in maintaining instruments and equipment, as well as the general environment, as if it was their own.”

The physicians, under the leadership of Dr. Austin, treat the staff with respect and high regard, acknowledging the staff’s attention to patient and physician satisfaction, says Ms. Allard. It also helps that there is a comfortable working environment established through humor and congeniality.

“There is a healthy and mutually respectful working environment which breeds a positive attitude and contentment on the part of each staff member,” she says. “Our staff is self-motivated and directed to ensure the surgeons are working in a safe and efficient environment and patients enjoy positive outcomes. Many patients who come once will ask to come back again for their future procedures.”
