Kevin Wasco, MD, of Surgical Associates of Neenah and Peter Janu, MD, of St. Elizabeth Hospital and Calumet Medical Center, offer TIF as an alternative to medicines aimed at controlling acid reflux. The incisionless procedure can be performed quickly and with minimal downtime, according to the report.
TIF adds another dimension to a common procedure, called an endoscopy, where a lit scope travels down patients’ stomachs. The TIF procedure uses the same concept but also delivers stitches while grabbing tissue to retract, Dr. Janu said in the report.
TIF has been approved by the FDA for utilization in the U.S. for approximately three years and is only practiced by a few healthcare facilities to gain better insight into how patients respond.
