Great Place to Work: Cypress Surgery Center (Wichita, Kan.)

Discounted YMCA memberships, company trips and a bonus incentive program are just three of the perks of working at the Cypress Surgery Center in Wichita, Kan. Staff members are rewarded because the center’s leadership views their work as critical and appreciates the effort they commit to quality patient care.

“Cypress Surgery Center was founded by Drs. Michael Brown, David Grainger and Bruce Tjaden with the theory that, to achieve a culture of success, we must provide quality care by hiring key employees that were experienced and committed,” says Judy Graham, administrator for Cypress. “To that end, we have aligned incentives — lunches, bus trips, gift cards and also a bonus incentive program — in order to give something back to them.”

Cypress has received recognition for its commitment to the staff as a local business journal has named Cypress a “Best Place to Work in Wichita” for two years.

Cypress, which is a joint venture with Symbion, opened in November 2000. It performs more than 10,000 procedures annually in six procedure rooms, two gastroenterology rooms and two pain management rooms. With its 38 physician owners and 79 active physicians on staff, the center performs cases in GYN, orthopedics, otolaryngology, general surgery, GI, urology, plastic surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery and pain management.

Even with so many physicians performing a significant number of procedures, the physicians and staff are still close-knit.

“We are still small enough to maintain a family-like environment among our physicians and staff,” says Ms. Graham. “The staff works well together and the physicians have always valued their opinions and listened to them. When we were building the facility, the physicians asked for and received input from the employees.  We pride ourselves in being responsive to our patients, physicians and employees needs.”
