National Patient Safety Foundation to Create Professional Society, Certification Program

The National Patient Safety Foundation will launch a professional society as well as a certification program designed specifically for patient safety professionals, according to a report by Healthcare IT News.

Patient safety professionals can join the NPSF’s American Society of Professionals in Patient Safety starting in Jan. 2011. Additionally, the certification program — Certification for Professionals in Patient Safety — will begin in Jan. 2012. The program is meant to standardize a curriculum for patient safety. Certification will be awarded based on criteria determined through clinical research and industry best practices, according to the report.

Membership in NPSF’s professional society is open to healthcare providers and other individuals whose primary responsibility is patient safety.
