Kelly Dean Shrum, MD, was charged with introducing misbranded drugs into interstate commerce, as well as healthcare fraud and money laundering. He allegedly implanted a birth control device that was not approved in the U.S. and then billed Medicaid for a more expensive device that is approved for use in the U.S., according to the report.
Dr. Shrum said he “acted in good faith” and was told by other physicians that the device was just like the approved device, according to the report.
