Researchers examined 90,743 medical professional liability claims from 2006 to 2015, of which 1,879 were closed claims and 367 were paid claims against gastroenterologists. Seventy-one percent of those claims were either dropped, withdrawn or dismissed.
What they found:
1. Large intestine procedures accounted for the majority of claims, representing 26 percent of all closed claims and totaling $18.39 million in total payments and $301,519 in average indemnity.
2. Procedures of the gallbladder and biliary tract had the highest average indemnity at $484,364, followed by small intestine procedures at $336,078, large intestine procedures at $301,519 and esophagus procedures at $267,577.
3. Average indemnity rate rose from 8.2 percent from 2006 to 2015.
4. Legal defense-related spending increased 8.7 percent over the same time period.
