GI leader to know: Dr. Vanessa Shami of the University of Virginia Medical Center

Vanessa M. Shami, MD, is the director of endoscopic ultrasound in the division of gastroenterology and hepatology at Charlottesville-based University of Virginia Medical Center.

Dr. Shami is also a professor of medicine at UVA. Her clinical practice focuses on GI oncology, Barrett’s ablation and upper and lower endoscopic mucosal resection.

She serves as a governing board councilor for the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Governing Board, and participates in the editorial review of VideoGIE, the official video journal of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Dr. Shami earned her medical degree from UVA, where she also completed her internal medicine residency and gastroenterology fellowship.
