Three mistakes that can cause a surgery center to fail:
1. Poor strategic planning. The ASC should set itself up for future success with a strategic plan that involves establishing a diverse payer mix and negotiating sufficient reimbursement from payers.
2. Inefficient scheduling. Too many or too few patients — and too many or too few operating rooms — can sink an ASC. Track patients and stay on top of scheduling issues to prevent surgeons from shifting cases back to the hospital.
3. High staff turnover. Surgeons prefer to work with the same operating room staff to ensure procedures run smoothly.
