Optum names new president, COO

UnitedHealth Group named Daniel Schumacher president and COO of Optum in an organizationwide leadership transition.

Mr. Schumacher previously served as president and COO of UnitedHealthcare and will replace Dirk McMahon as president and COO of Optum. Mr. McMahon was named CEO of UnitedHealthcare after CEO Steve Nelson retired.

In his new role, Mr. Schumacher oversees OptumInsight, Optum Technology and overall Optum operations, which includes OptumCare and Surgical Care Affiliates. He joined UnitedHealth Group in 1999 and has held various leadership roles since then.

He takes on Optum’s leadership role during a time of change; Optum closed its acquisition of DaVita Medical Group, which has practices in five states, on June 19.
