Here are some specifics about Pennsylvania ASCs from the release:
1. ASC profits in FY 2009 increased 0.18 percent, from 26.08 percent in FY 2008 to 26.26 percent in fiscal 2009.
2. The net number of outpatient procedures performed in FY 2009 rose 7.2 percent for ASCs and fell 0.6 percent for HOPDs.
3. The total number of outpatient procedures performed grew by 68.4 percent from FY 2000 to FY 2009, and more than 65.1 percent of that growth occurred in ASCs.
4. Medical assistance covered 4.1 percent of patients in ASCs, compared with 11.0 percent of patients in HOPDs. Meanwhile, 53.8 percent of ASC patients were covered by commercial health insurance, compared with 46.8 percent in HOPDs.
5. In FY 2008, 22 new ASCs opened. The number of ASCs in Pennsylvania grew from 72 in 2000 to 262 in 2009, compared with 171 acute-care hospitals in the state.
