Question: What is your best advice for ensuring a healthy joint venture ASC between hospitals and physicians?
Jill Thrasher: Relentless transparent communication from the hospital to the physicians. This communication should include a key contact person at the hospital and a strong physician champion. The physician champion would be respected among all peers and will share information with the physicians involved. Physicians and administrators should share a common vision.
Q: What works well in terms of building a strong culture and operational structure for the ASC?
JT: Employees that support the mission and passion for patient care are imperative for infrastructure to support culture and operations. The management team must be cohesive and work together. Consistent team-building events, skills-practice activities and staff meetings keep the momentum moving forward in a positive direction.
Q: What doesn’t work well to foster a successful joint venture? What should ASC physicians and administrators avoid?
JT: Physicians and administrators should avoid being enigmatic. Meetings should include all parties involved. Joint ventures do not work well when a common goal isn’t shared, and communication is lacking.
