With merger still pending, Northside Hospital applies for surgery center CON — 5 insights

While Sandy Springs, Ga.-based Northside Hospital’s merger with Lawrenceville, Ga.-based Gwinnett Health System has come to a standstill, Northside is busy pursuing other transactions and developments, Reporter Newspapers reports.

Here’s what you should know:

1. Northside developed a new medical office building in Atlanta and applied for a certificate of need to build an outpatient surgery center on the building’s top floor.

2. Piedmont Atlanta Hospital and WellStar Atlanta Medical Center challenged the CON application.

3. Northside also bought a 2.10-acre parking lot adjacent to a medical center in Sandy Springs, with no specific plans for the property.

4. In addition, the health system moved to acquire Northeast Georgia Diagnostic Clinic in Gainesville, Ga., and launched a sports medicine network this year.

5. Northside’s merger with Gwinnett was announced in 2015 and was expected to be finalized in 2016. Northside and Gwinnett are still awaiting Federal Trade Commission approval of the transaction, which would create one of the region’s biggest employers.
