Here’s what you should know:
1. Most health and patient data is currently stored as unstructured medical text, meaning healthcare organizations must hire skilled medical coders to manage data entry or have developer teams write custom codes for automatic data extraction.
2. Amazon Comprehend Medical allows developers to accurately identify medical information, such as medical conditions, anatomical terms, medications and test results, without creating custom rules.
3. The service is HIPAA-eligible and adheres to General Data Protection Regulation standards. Personal information can be excluded, and no customer data is stored or saved.
4. With these capabilities, Amazon Comprehend Medical will enable researchers and physicians to share and analyze data sets that weren’t practical to analyze before, according to Nucleus Research Vice President of Research Rebecca Wettemann.
5. The software allows developers to integrate two APIs into workflows and applications. The Medical Named Entity and Relationship Extraction API will cost one cent per 100 characters of text, while the Protected Health Information Data Extraction and Identification will cost 14 cents per 100 characters.
6. Customers who use both APIs in the first three months can get up to 25,000 characters of text analyzed for free.
