Boston-based Partners Healthcare and Boston-based Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary agreed to pay the state $175,000 to settle alleged Massachusetts consumer protection law violations.

Here’s what you should know:

1. Several consumers submitted complaints to the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office alleging the practices were inadequately disclosing costs associated with procedures, leading to unexpected billing charges.

2. Partners will pay $150,000 and Massachusetts Eye and Ear will pay $25,000.

3. Partners acquired Massachusetts Eye and Ear in 2018.

4. Both organizations agreed to increase billing transparency and will notify patients of several factors influencing charges.

5. Attorney General Maura Healey said, “Massachusetts residents have a right to transparency when it comes to their healthcare. I am pleased that through this settlement, two major healthcare providers are changing their practices to better inform consumers about the cost of services and help them avoid unexpected charges.”
