NYU covers tuition costs for current and future medical students: 5 things to know

New York City-based New York University School of Medicine is offering full-tuition scholarships to current and future students in its MD degree program.

Here are five things to know:

1. The school is offering the scholarships to all students, regardless of need or merit. The scholarship will cover $55,018 in yearly tuition costs.

2. NYU said the new scholarship offerings are an effort to address the high cost of medical education and to attract the best students to the medical field.

3. The NYU School of Medicine is the only top-10 medical school to fully cover the cost of its students’ tuition.

4. According to NYU, the high cost of medical education drives students toward higher-paying specialties, which draws talent away from fields such as primary care, gynecology and pediatrics.

5. A study from the Association of American Medical Colleges found 75 percent of physicians graduated with debt, with the median debt of a graduating student being $202,000.
