Here’s what you should know:
1. The increase has occurred despite a decrease in mortality rates for all cancers combined.
2. Liver cancer mortality rate increases were seen in both men and women 25 years and older.
3. White, African-American and Hispanic people saw the highest increases, while Asians and Pacific Islanders both saw mortality rates drop.
4. Survival rates were unaffected by the increase, which means the incidence rate is rising drastically.
5. Researchers attributed the increase in incidence to excess body weight and the high hepatitis C virus infection rate in the baby boomer generation.
6. Liver cancer mortality rates were highest in adults age 75 and older, followed by adults between 65 years old and 74 years old.
