Here are three insights into the conference.

1. The studies examined a bevy of areas including:

  • The ophthalmic side effects of checkpoint inhibitors
  • Ocular tumor growth
  • Visual and refractive outcomes of intraocular lens implantation
  • Innovative surgical technique protocols
  • The benefits of early eye disease detection

2. In a two-year study, researchers examined how to best lower infection risk following intravitreal injection. By using prefilled syringes, researchers were able to reduce the infection rate from 1 infection for every 3,000 patients to 1 infection for every 9,000 patients.

3. Wills Eye surgical retina fellow Philip Storey, MD, said, “The prefilled syringe has the potential of decreasing infection for patients with diabetes in this commonly performed procedure. Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of blindness in the U.S. for working-age adults.”
