2. In a two-year study, researchers examined how to best lower infection risk following intravitreal injection. By using prefilled syringes, researchers were able to reduce the infection rate from 1 infection for every 3,000 patients to 1 infection for every 9,000 patients.
3. Wills Eye surgical retina fellow Philip Storey, MD, said, “The prefilled syringe has the potential of decreasing infection for patients with diabetes in this commonly performed procedure. Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of blindness in the U.S. for working-age adults.”
