To help healthcare organizations prepare, plan and respond to disasters, The Joint Commission updated its online Emergency Management Resources portal.

The portal provides free emergency management information related to natural disasters, active shooter situations, cyberattacks, industrial incidents and other disaster situations for healthcare organizations in all settings.

Here are five of the new resources.

1. “Active Shooter Planning and Response: Learn How to Survive a Shooting Event in a Healthcare Setting”: A resource from HHS’ Healthcare and Public Health Sector Coordinating Council and the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response.

2. Guidance documents, resources and tools from the ASPR Division for At-Risk Individuals, Behavioral Health & Community Resilience.

3. Chemical hazards emergency medical management: A comprehensive, user-friendly, web-based resource. The resource is downloadable, so it can be accessed even during an emergency.

4. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s “The Dialogue,” is a quarterly newsletter for disaster behavioral health coordinators, local service providers, federal agencies and nongovernmental organizations.

5. “Managing Patient Information during a Mass Casualty Incident”: A case study by Boston-based Brigham and Women’s Hospital on lessons from treating dozens of Boston Marathon Bombing victims in 2013.
