The center is a joint venture between private practice physicians and a major academic medical center. NYGI’s 16 gastroenterologists use state-of-the-art endoscopy equipment and a fully electronic medical record/reporting system, according to James C. DiLorenzo, MD, president of NYGI. “Investing in safety based technology, such as 100% disposable endoscopic accessories, end tidal CO2 monitoring, and a video laryngoscope for emergency intubations is just the start. All recovery room nurses are ACLS-certified,” says Dr. DiLorenzo. “We have strived to create a culture of quality by instituting measures such as single-dose, single-use vials and a comprehensive infection control program long before they were required. Comprehensive quality management and continuous quality improvement programs help us provide the best in GI care by monitoring key metrics including polyp and adenoma detection rates, withdrawal times, cecal intubation rates and patient satisfaction surveys.”
The ASC employs rigorous employee re-training in-services for endoscope reprocessing, use of argon plasma coagulation and cautery devices and provides financial support for added certifications, which it considers a great foundation of learning for its GI techs. “Constant repetition and re-training helps to keep repair costs down.”
