The study authors examined patients who underwent total hip replacements from January 2016 to September 2016. There were 578 patients who completed the survey and study authors found:
1. Eight patients were readmitted to the hospital within 30 days of surgery and 28 were readmitted within 90 days of surgery.
2. The patients who were readmitted were more likely to undergo revision hip replacement procedures.
3. Of the eight patients who were readmitted within 30 days, half rated the hospital a 9 or 10 out of 10 on the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems for total hip replacement. Overall, 82.2 percent of the non-readmitted patients rated the hospital a 9 or 10.
4. Study authors concluded, “Our results demonstrate a significant negative association between readmission and HCAHPS scores under several dimensions of the survey including nurse communication, doctor communication, pain management and global satisfaction with the hospital experience.”
