How 2 ophthalmologists expanded Eye Center South into a multistate practice

The up-and-coming $25 million medical complex is separate from the pair’s Eye Center South. Dr. Marnix Heersink opened Eye Center South in 1980 in Dothan, Ala., adding an ASC to the facility four years later. Eye Center South has since expanded to having offices in Georgia and Florida.

Dr. Marnix Heersink renovated Eye Center South five times since opening the practice. Eye Center South’s ASC, Surgery Center South, can house up to 18 ORs. An ophthalmologist by trade, Dr. Marnix Heersink has seen the value in offering many services. Surgery Center South provides patients endoscopies and plastic surgery, as well as other eye and outpatient procedures.

Drs. Heersink and Heersink partnered with other specialists through the nation to ensure they thrive in a time of consolidation. Diane Jasperse, Eye Center South administrator, told Dothan Eagle, “There’s a lot of consolidation in medical practices. Ophthalmology, for one, has always been very fragmented. However, if you look across the country right now you will see there are a lot of practices coming together hoping to get the economies of scale and the efficiencies of being in a bigger group.”
