Here’s what you should know:
1. Hepatocellular malignant neoplasm-NOS has features similar to the pediatric liver cancer hepatoblastoma and the adult liver cancer hepatocellular carcinoma.
2. When hepatocellular malignant neoplasm-NOS is treated similar to hepatoblastoma, it yields better clinical outcomes.
3. Researchers analyzed 11 patients between 4 years old and 15 years old. They all received HB-targeted chemotherapy and a complete surgical resection. Despite facing a poor prognosis, all the patients survived and achieved remission.
4. Los Angeles-based Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases Deputy Director Leo Mascarenhas, MD, said in a release, “The high survival rate of our patients further supports our argument that hepatocellular malignant neoplasm-NOS is best considered a subtype of hepatoblastoma. Without such a clear definition of the tumor, patients may be treated inappropriately.”
