Plastic Surgeon Steven Robinson Lists 4 Top Concerns for His Multispecialty ASC

Steven L. Robinson, MD, FACS, a board member at Riverside Outpatient Surgery Center, a six-OR multispecialty ASC in Columbus, Ohio, comments on four of his top concerns. Dr. Robinson is a board-certified plastic surgeon. His ASC, which has more than 20 co-owners, hosts plastic surgery, ophthalmology, general surgery, ob-gyn, urology and occasionally orthopedics, podiatry and pain.

1. Payor reimbursement contracts. “We are continually trying to negotiate favorable rates and trying to at least not have our rates cut,” Dr. Robinson says. “Payors always threatening to cut rates but there has been no reductions to my knowledge.”

2. Some co-owners due to retire. “Right now we have a good stable of surgeons and blocked at a high capacity, but we are a little top-heavy in terms of average age,” he says. “Some co-owners are due to retire in the next few years.

3. Recruitment of new surgeons.
The ASC manager carries out recruiting in conjunction with Ohio Health, a local hospital system that is minority partner in the ASC. Young surgeons use the facility as credentialed surgeons before the board makes them an offer to become a co-owner.

4. Healthcare reform. “More regulations can’t be a good thing,” Dr. Robinson says. “It means we need more people in administration.” As healthcare reform regulations are finalized, he believes there will be “a period of confusion until we know what the law really means.”
