President Donald Trump nominated Jerome Adams, MD, to serve as U.S. Surgeon General.

Here’s what you should know:

1. The American Society of Anesthesiologists congratulated Dr. Adams on his nomination.

2. Dr. Adams could be the first physician anesthesiologist to hold the position.

3. Dr. Adams is the state of Indiana’s current health commissioner. He oversees the state’s Public Health Protection and Laboratory Services, Health and Human Services, Health Care Quality and Regulatory as well as Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Commissions.

4. Vice President Mike Pence appointed him to the position in 2014 when he was still governor of Indiana.

5. Dr. Adams is a leading voice in the nation’s opioid crisis.
