Trump picks Indiana Health Commissioner Dr. Jerome Adams as surgeon general: 5 things to know

President Donald Trump nominated Jerome Adams, MD, to be the next surgeon general, according to USA Today.

Here are five things to know about Dr. Adams:

1. Dr. Adams is currently the state health commissioner of Indiana.

2. While governor, Vice President Mike Pence named Dr. Adams the commissioner.

3. Dr. Adams led the efforts to combat an HIV outbreak in Scott County linked to intravenous drug use. The outbreak surpassed 200 cases, spurring Dr. Adams to implement a needle exchange program.

4. He is the secretary of Indiana State Department of Health’s executive board and chairman on the Indiana state trauma care committee.

5. An anesthesiologist, he is chair of the pharmacy and therapeutics committee at Indianapolis-based Eskenazi Health.
