Here are the updated standards:
1. Identify a leader responsible for pain management and safe opioid prescribing practices.
2. Involve patients when considering a treatment. Base the treatment on realistic expectations and measurable goals.
3. Identify high-risk patients to promote safe opioid use.
4. Monitor high-risk patients.
5. Increase physician access to drug monitoring programs.
6. Implement performance improvement activities centered around pain assessment and management. This will increase patient safety and quality of care.
The standards will be effective Jan. 1, 2018.
