Researchers presenting at an AcademyHealth meeting found some physicians in the same geographic area were paid almost double the reimbursement of others for the same CPT code, based on a review of 2006 data from Thomson Reuters MarketScan.
The researchers suggested cutting fees for physicians at the high end, but others argued physicians at the high end may be getting paid correctly while rest are underpaid. They said private payors have too much market power to allow most physicians to negotiate a fair rate.
