The Senate confirmed Scott Gottlieb, MD, as the FDA commissioner in a 57 to 42 vote on May 9. In April, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, & Pensions confirmed Dr. Gottlieb’s nomination, mostly along party lines.

40 patients develop septic arthritis after NJ clinic fails to abide by standard hygiene practices
State reports confirmed 40 patients developed knee septic arthritis after receiving care at Wall Township, N.J.-based Osteo Relief Institute Jersey Shore. One clinic physician told state health department investigators she did not wash her hands between treating patients.
Anthem asks judge for more time to win merger approval
Anthem is seeking a 60-day preliminary injunction from Vice Chancellor Travis Laster that would prevent Cigna from terminating the proposed merger. Two separate courts denied the Anthem-Cigna merger. Anthem is petitioning the U.S. Supreme Court to hear its case.

Tenet Healthcare Corp. selected Jeffrey Welch as its new market CEO. In his role, Mr. Welch will be responsible for Tenet hospitals in the northeast division.
Anesthesiologists murdered in South Boston home, suspect opens fire on police
Police found Richard Field, MD, and Lina Bolanos, MD, dead in their Boston home May 6, after a shootout with the alleged suspect. Police said the physicians and the suspect had known each other, but police haven’t defined their exact relationship.
