Lead study author and New York City-based Weill Cornell Medical College associate professor Reem Sharaiha, MD, and colleagues followed 278 total patients; Approximately 91 underwent endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, 120 underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and 67 underwent laparoscopic banding.
Here’s what you should know.
1. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy surgery achieved the greatest percent of total body weight loss at 29.28 percent. Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty followed with 17.57 percent and laparoscopic banding patients lost 14.46 percent.
2. Patients who received endoscopic treatment had lower complications than surgical treatment.
3. Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty patients left the hospital the same day as treatment, while laparoscopic gastrectomy patients stayed for three days and laparoscopic banding patients stayed for a day and a half.
4. The procedures also affected costs. Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty patients had the lowest cost at $12,000. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy costs patients $22,000 while laparoscopic banding costs $15,000.
Researchers concluded physicians should consider endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty as a potential treatment option.
