National Cancer Institute’s colorectal cancer screening initiative seeks to increase Kentucky screening rates: 4 points

In collaboration with Lexington-based University of Kentucky, the National Cancer Institute is conducting educational colorectal cancer outreach services to increase screening rates throughout the state.

Here’s what you should know.

1. The state will soon participate in the Screen to Save Colorectal Cancer Outreach and Screening Initiative. The initiative seeks to increase screening rates among men and women 50-years and older from diverse communities.

2. NCI’s Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities will use two National Outreach Network programs to increase awareness and promote screenings throughout Kentucky.

3. Kentucky has one of the highest colorectal cancer mortality rates in the country with more than 800 people dying annually.

4. The University’s Community Health Educator Mindy Rogers said in a release, “The intent of this initiative is to provide additional community and regional resources to aid our efforts to improve cancer screening rates and save lives.”
