Physicians tend to receive higher compensation in rural and poorer areas, and many of the states where physicians in general stand to earn the most are in the Midwest.

Here are the 10 states where physicians overall earn the most, according to the Medscape Physician Compensation Report 2016. The survey includes 19,200 physicians in more than 26 specialties.

1. North Dakota: $348,000
2. New Hampshire: $322,000
3. Nebraska: $317,000
4. Alaska: $314,000
5. Montana: $304,000
6. Indiana: $304,000
7. Wisconsin: $302,000
8. Mississippi: $302,000
9. West Virginia: $299,000
10. Arkansas: $299,000
