North Carolina is one of more than 30 states that have approved or are about to approve new budgets that anticipate a $24 billion, six-month extension of the extra Medicaid funding for states.
Congress had been working on the extension as part of the same bill funding the physician fee-fix, but the House pulled the Medicaid provision out of the bill before passing it late last month. Congress then went on recess for a week and returned only today.
Without the extra funding, North Carolina would have a $490 million gap in the state budget for next year and the state legislature has no plans to raise taxes to fill that gap.
