New York City-based Montefiore Einstein Center for Transplantation surgical team members employ various strategies to maintain their focus through lengthy procedures.

Here are five thoughts:

1. Many surgeons wear comfortable shoes while others may use loupes on their eye glasses during procedures.

2. In the operating room, Montefiore Einstein Center for Transplantation team members do not check their cell phones, which may present distractions or constantly remind the team how long they have been in the OR.

3. Some surgeons enjoy listening to music in the background, with one surgeon’s playlist having a runtime exceeding 14 hours.

4. To stay on top of his game, one transplant team member maintains his physical health by running 30 miles weekly and eating a vegan diet.

5. The traditional caffeine boost like a shot espresso may be necessary to keep surgeons focused and engaged for hours-long procedures.
