Southern Eye Center in Mississippi performs free cataract procedures: 4 things to know

As part of a national day dedicated to making a difference in the community, Hattiesburg, Miss.-based Southern Eye Clinic performed five cataract surgeries for free, WDAM reports.

Here’s what you should know.

1. The physicians at Southern Eye Center called their day of service a “backyard” mission trip.

2. Cataract specialist Cameron Griffith said the decision to help people in the center’s own backyard was an easy one.

3. The five patients were referred to the clinic by a local optometrist.

4. The clinic routinely performs cataract surgery for uninsured or underinsured patients at no cost to the patients.
